Recently relocated Denver based jam monsters The Malah kicked off their ILLUMIN8 tour with a kick-ass show at the Fox in Boulder last thursday night. Local supergroup Tiger Party, featuring members of Octopus Nebula and Signal Path, got things going strong with a memorable jamtronica set featuring a crunchy rendition of Justice’s ‘Genesis’ followed by what sounded like a slight tease of The Wall. Needless to say the venue was buzzing between sets as all the late arrivers were kicking themselves for underestimating Tiger Party’s awesomeness.
Redemption came once The Malah got things started. The play between the heavy electronic sequences and the bright improvisations fit in perfectly in the electro-jam rich Colorado music scene. Whether or not these guys can carve out a nitch alongside local favorites STS9 or Lotus remains to be seen, but for where they are now, The Malah definitely does bring a unique sound to the table, and were able to bring the party to a climax as the evening progressed. I would love to see the word spread about these guys and possibly see them on some killer opening slots after their national tour ends in February. In the mean time, go check them out this Friday the 7th at three20south in Breckenridge, the 8th at the Steamboat Grand Ballroom in Steamboat Springs, or the 18th at the Belly Up in Aspen! Stay rowdy Colorado! Peace!
